Macintosh Setup Instructions

Setting up FreePPP on your Macintosh

Install the FreePPP Software:

You will need to make sure that you have MacTCP or Open Transport installed on your system. If neither MacTCP or Open Transport is installed on your system, consult with your Apple documentation for instructions on installing the appropriate software.

  • To install the FreePPP software on your system:
    1. First thing, double-click the README FIRST icon and review the information listed.
    2. Double-click on Install FreePPP icon. Follow the instructions on the screen. You will be asked for a location to install the program and we suggest selecting your hard drive as the installation location. After software install has finished, your computer will be restarted for you.
    3. You are now ready to configure your software.

FreePPP Configuration:

1. Pull down the FreePPP menu (located on the right side of your menu bar near the Finder), and select Open FreePPP Setup. Click on the small arrow on the bottom left corner of the window to show the settings.

2. Click on the Modem Setup button at the bottom of the window. Most of these settings will be defaults, so you should not have to worry about them. If your modem is not connected to your Modem Port (most are, so you probably don't have to worry about it). Change the setting in the Connected to box to match your hardware. If your computer is a Performa, check the "Performa Internal Modem" box. In the Modem Init String Settings, choose "AutoDetect init string". Click on the OK button.

3. Click on the Accounts tab. Select "Untitled" and click on the Edit button.

4. Erase the Server name (Untitled") and enter "Calview.Com" in its place.

5. Enter the Connect Phone Number from your Account Information in the Phone number field. You should NOT have to enter the area code.

6. Choose "Directly" from the Connect drop-down menu.

7. Enter your password from your Account Information provided by the Calview Representative in the Password field.

8. Click on the Connection tab.

9. The Port Speed will be based on your modem. Use the following chart:

Modem Speed Port Speed Setting
9600 bps 9600
14,400 bps 19,200
28,800 bps 38,400 or 57,600

10. Set the Flow Control to "CTS & RTS (DTR)". The settings in the Options tab should not be changed. Click the OK button. You should not have to worry about the settings in the Locations section.

11. Close the FreePPP Setup Window.

Connecting to the Internet:

This is the procedure you will use each time you connect to the Internet. You must use this procedure before running any Internet applications.

1. Pull down the FreePPP Menu icon from the menu bar (near the clock).

2. Select Open PPP Connection. You will see a progress screen showing the connection status, which will disappear upon connection. Once connected, you are now ready to start any Internet applications.

3. When you are done and have closed all other Internet applications, pull down the FreePPP menu icon again and select Close PPP Connection. This will cause your phone and system to disconnect from Calview.Com.

4. You are done! Congratulations!
